Now this is an inspirational
sight to see.
Surfer Bethany Hamilton,
who lost her left arm after a shark attack in 2003, took the stage at the first
ever Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Sports Award to accept the honor of Favorite
Comeback Athlete, and stunned in a one-shoulder coral lace dress.
The 24-year-old has been a
great role model for fans, proving that nothing can stop you from continuing to
do what you love.
"Cause immmm HAPPY!!!!!"
Hamilton tweeted after receiving the award and
also shared an Instagram photo from the show, writing, "Hey West Coast!!! Tune in to
Nickelodeon & watch the #kidschoicesports tonight at 8pm"
On October 31, 2003, Hamilton
went for a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai, and was lying on her
surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water, when a 14-foot tiger shark
attacked her.
"I felt a lot of pressure
and a couple of lightning fast tugs," Bethany wrote on her website. "Then
I watched in shock as the water around me turned bright red. Somehow, I stayed
calm. My left arm was gone almost to the armpit, along with a huge
crescent-shaped chunk of my red, white and blue surfboard..."
The traumatic incident cost
Hamilton her left arm, but that didn't stop her from surfing. Three weeks after
the attack, she got back on her board.
Bethany penned the book Soul
Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board,
which was later adapted into a movie.
