The first plasma: the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device is now in operation

Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics announced that it had successfully created helium plasma in the Wendelstein 7-X fusion device. The device is the world's largest stellarator, which, like the more well-known tokamak, uses magnetic fields inside a torus to create fusion plasmas. In its initial run the Wendelstein 7-X converted around 1 mg of helium gas into a plasma for one tenth of a second, achieving a temperature of around 1 million degrees.

After completing tests with helium in which the researchers will be attempting to extend the duration of the plasmas, hydrogen gas will replace helium as the input material early in 2016.
