Gaia's billion-star map


This is the best ever map of the stars in the Milky Way and neighboring galaxies. It comes from the European Space Agency's Gaia spacecraft, which has precisely measured more than a billion stars, including 400 million that have never been seen before. The preliminary data, released today, reveal that the Milky Way is even larger than astronomers thought.
