Could machines have become self-aware without our knowing it?

Computer scientists, philosophers, and science fiction writers have thought a lot about the creation of machines with artificial intelligence. George Musser puts a new spin on that issue: Would we even recognize AI if we achieved it? "The huge obstacle to addressing such questions," he writes, "is that no one is really sure what consciousness is, let alone whether we’d know it if we saw it." Musser walks readers through several attempts to classify levels of consciousness, so that we're not caught unawares when machines become aware.
